We hope you’ll join us for New Canaan Land Trust’s Annual Meeting on Wednesday, November 18th. Hear updates on the Land Trust, the progress of our permanent headquarters, and our ongoing stewardship work, followed by a presentation from our featured speaker, Michael Goergen, President and CEO of The American Chestnut Foundation.
Once a defining tree of eastern North American forests, the American chestnut has a history that reaches across continents and a future still being written. Michael will trace the tree’s rise and decline, share what decades of restoration work have taught us, and discuss where The American Chestnut Foundation is headed. He will also discuss recurrent genomic selection, an approach helping breeders make progress on disease resistance, growth, adaptation, and the tree’s ability to thrive in a changing forest.
The presentation is especially timely as New Canaan Land Trust is working to help restore the American chestnut locally. NCLT is currently undertaking a chestnut planting project and working with the Connecticut Chapter of The American Chestnut Foundation to contribute data that can support ongoing research and restoration efforts.
