Hello Friends,

I’d like to provide you with a quick update from the New Canaan Land Trust, and some of the ways that COVID-19 is impacting our programs, preserves, and events.

Visiting Our Preserves

At this time, the New Canaan Land Trust’s preserves will remain open to the public. We understand that for many, these special places provide an escape from the chaos that has entered our lives. As our President noted in his Spring Equinox letter, enjoying the outdoors can be a form of therapy, give us a sense of comfort, and restore our mood.

Over the coming weeks and months, we expect NCLT’s preserves to receive more use than ever before.

To help us keep our preserves open to the public while still supporting national and local efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19, we need your help:

  • When walking the trails, please practice social distancing by staying at least 6 feet away from other visitors.
  • Out of an abundance of caution, we require that dogs be leashed on all properties at all times. You may also want to consider leaving your dog at home, as dogs on trails create opportunities for close contact (something we are trying to avoid at this time).
  • Please park only in designated parking areas. If our parking lots are full, try visiting another NCLT preserve. We don’t want to burden our first responders with parking violations, and want to continue to be courteous to our neighbors.

We will be closely monitoring developments and recommendations from Federal, State, and local officials, and will provide updates as needed.

NCLT maintains trails on 8 preserves, totaling nearly 200 acres. Each preserve is unique in its topography, ecology, and other features. Check out the “Places to Explore” menu on our website for a complete listing of these preserves, including trail maps, parking information, and more.

Programs & Events

We are optimistic that the installation of the New Canaan Sculpture Trail will continue as planned. Artists will be installing their sculptures over the coming weeks, and we envision our community enjoying the works while practicing social distancing. The New Canaan Sculpture Trail Opening Party, scheduled for April 25, has been postponed. We hope to reschedule the party, and will provide more information at a later date.

All upcoming New Canaan Land Trust events and programs have been cancelled, though we hope to reschedule many of these events in the summer and fall. We will be assessing this on a case-by-case basis, and encourage you to check our events calendar and/or social media pages for updated information.

Looking Forward

The New Canaan Land Trust will continue looking for ways to support our community in these challenging times, and into the future. We will continue our work to protect two new parcels of land, totaling over 6 acres. We will also ensure that our properties are well maintained, and that our programs and events can continue when this crisis has passed.

Lastly, I ask that you consider making a donation to help us through these difficult times. Your support will ensure that our community’s special places are well cared for, now and into the future.

Warmest regards,

Aaron Lefland
