She will discuss the Aspetuck Land Trust Green Corridor Project which aims to increase the scale and rate of land conservation within the Aspetuck footprint. This project will hopefully become a model for communities in our region to balance conservation efforts with economic and environmental health throughout the urban\, suburban\, and rural settings across Fairfield County. \n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Mary Ellen Lemay is the Landowner Engagement Director for the Aspetuck Land Trust (Westport\, Fairfield\, Weston\, Easton\, Monroe CT)\, Pollinator Pathway Facilitator for the Hudson to Housatonic Regional Conservation Partnership\, and also a member of the Connecticut Native Plants Working Group. \nShe earned her BS in Biology from Fairfield University\, her MBA from Fordham University\, and her Masters in Environmental Management from Yale University School of The Environment. \nShe is the former Trumbull Land Trust president and currently the Chairwoman of the Trumbull Conservation Commission\, a CT DEEP Certified Master Wildlife Conservationist\, and on the Board of the Merritt Parkway Conservancy. \n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Register Here

SUMMARY:Toward a More Walkable New Canaan by Jeff Speck
DESCRIPTION:National planning expert Jeff Speck has spent his career studying what makes cities thrive and has boiled it down to one key factor: walkability. From economists\, epidemiologists\, and environmentalists to preservationists\, planners\, and parents\, all agree that walkable communities are better in just about every way. Speck explains why walking is useful\, particularly regarding land-use\, zoning\, transit\, and parking\, and then focuses on how\, by sharing examples of places where walking is safe\, comfortable\, and interesting. \nJeff Speck is an award-winning planner who co-authored Suburban Nation (Wall Street Journal calls it “the urbanist’s bible”)\, and wrote Walkable City\, the best-selling city-planning title of the past decade\, translated into eight languages. His TED talks and YouTube videos have been viewed six million+ times. Speck has been named a fellow of both the American Institute of Certified Planners and the Congress for New Urbanism. DESCRIPTION:Autumn Mushroom Hunting in Connecticut \nOutdoor class with The Mushroom Hunting Foundation \nRecommended for adults and older teens. \nThere are many types of mushrooms in our region. Some are poisonous\, but their ecology is fun to learn about…and others are simply delicious! Ryan Bouchard and Emily Schmidt\, New England’s leading mushroom-hunting teachers\, will lead us into the forest to closely examine local fungi in their natural habitats. They will explain the basics of wild mushroom science and safety\, demonstrate helpful tools\, and put special emphasis on the fall species that are considered “safe for beginners” to cook with. This class will show you inside a whole world of adventure that most people overlook. \nStudents should bring cameras or phones (ringers off\, please). \nAbout the Instructors: Ryan T. Bouchard is the author and photographer of the influential book Gourmet Mushrooms of the Northeast 2019. Emily Bouchard studies our local mushroom species (and wild plants as well) and invents new ways to use these special ingredients; she created the groundbreaking wild plant instructional video series In the Weeds with Emily Schmidt (her maiden name). A spotlight on the Monarch butterfly reveals its extraordinary life cycle and the specific threats it faces. Join us for this engaging and informative session to discover how you can make a difference in safeguarding pollinators for future generations. \nAbout the Instructor: \nVictor DeMasi is a highly active member of The Pollinator Pathway. He was a wetland conservation officer in his hometown of Redding for 20 years and is presently a curatorial affiliate at the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History in New Haven. He busies himself by preserving open spaces in town and preserving butterflies in the museum. His fieldwork with butterflies contributed almost a thousand citations to the recently published Connecticut Butterfly Atlas. He has contributed articles to scientific publications\, and his mark-recapture studies with Swallowtail butterflies were recently cited in the book Swallowtails of the Americas.  \nHis recent butterfly study trips with his photographer wife\, Roanna\, have taken him several times to the Amazon forest in Guyana\, Nicaragua\, and yearly studies in Montana\, California\, where he assesses the impact of climate change on that fauna. Kids will have an opportunity to clear the walking trails- please bring a bucket and gloves. Following a nature themed scavenger hunt\, families will have the opportunity to gather and create crafts using the collected items. One craft will have pinecones\, sunbutter\, bird seed and yarn to make bird feeders. The second craft will involve plain paper\, tape\, glue and markers to create a nature collage. This is a wholesome way to connect to your children and to help them connect to nature – you don’t want to miss this special event! \nThis event takes place at Still Pond Preserve on April 5th at 10am.
