SUMMARY:Last Saturday on the Trail: February 25th
DESCRIPTION:Charge your heart-rate monitors\, grab your ankle weights\, and lace up your sneakers – the New Canaan Land Trust’s 2022 Winter Hiking Challenge is underway! \nFollow the campaign on social media as we post tips and tricks for getting the most out of your winter walking workout. Then join us on Saturday\, February 25th at 10:00 AM for the finale of the Winter Hiking Challenge – a fitness hike led by a member of the New Canaan YMCA. \n \n Register Here\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n February 10th – Incorporating Intervals \nThis week\, try spicing up your hikes by incorporating intervals. Interval walking takes advantage of short bursts of energy to get your heart rate and metabolism going. The NCLT recommends this 22-minute interval workout: \n\nStart with a 5-minute warm-up\, walking at a comfortable pace\nBegin walking briskly for 1 minute. The brisk pace is like you’re walking at Watson-Symington\, and there’s a cute dog ahead on the trail asking for pets.\nWalk at a moderate pace for 2 minutes. This intensity should be like your mobile coffee order is ready for pickup – and you need to grab it before it gets cold.\nWalk as fast as possible for 1 minute. The pace doesn’t need to be a jog/run\, although it can be if you want – this intensity can be like your dog has escaped her leash and run ahead on your walk – still in sight\, but you need to catch up before she disturbs other walkers at Watson-Symington.\nWalk slowly for 2 minutes. Good\, you caught your runaway dog. You can relax and slowly walk towards your car.\nRepeat this Walk briskly/Walk at a moderate pace/Walk as fast as possible/walk slowly. You can repeat this as often as you want\, but we recommend repeating this cycle at least twice.\nEnd with a 5-minute cool down\, walking at a comfortable pace.\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n February 15th – Walking with Weights \nWork on building strength and boosting your metabolism by walking with weights! Adding weights to your walks makes your exercise more efficient while still being lower-impact than running or jogging. \n\nWrist weights or dumbbells can help build strength in the upper body when you pump your arms.\nA weighted vest increases the intensity of a workout because your effective body weight is higher.\nAnkle weights can help strengthen your legs\, but use them with caution\, as they can lead to joint stress.\n\nSlowly incorporate weights into your walks by using them every other workout. Start with lighter weights and work your way up to heavier ones as you gain strength. Don’t feel like you need to commit to a 30-45 minute walk on day one – start walking with weights for around 15 minutes\, and increase the time as you advance. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n February 17th – Change Up the Terrain \nSometimes all you need to make your walks more challenging is to change the direction you’re walking in! Try walking your usual trail in the opposite direction. You can even step off the trail and push your body to walk over obstacles such as rocks and logs to bring variety to your workout. \nYou can always change the physical terrain you walk on as well. If you usually walk on the road\, try walking on one of NCLT’s public access preserves. Changing from road to trail works your leg muscles in a different way\, and different types of terrain require different upper body and balance to keep you stabilized on the path. \nUtilizing hills is a great well to make your workouts more intense. Climbing helps you build strength in your legs and boosts your metabolism. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n February 22nd – Guided Walks \nDid you know that guided workouts aren’t just for cycling and yoga? Many apps will help you up your step count while listening to a fitness professional push you to your limits! \nAaptive – Aaptive has over 6\,000+ audio and visual fitness classes\, including ones specifically for walking outdoors! You can test the app with a 7-day free trial (then $14.99 monthly) and try outdoor walks such as “Walk for Your Heart\,” “Small Steps Add Up\,” and “Walk Show Game Show.” \nPeloton Digital – Try Peloton Digital free for 30 days (then $12.99 monthly) for various outdoor walking workouts. Peloton offers classes like “20 min Disney Walk\,” “Spotify Surf Rock Sunshine Walk\,” and “20 min Power Walk.” \nYouTube – If you want free guided workouts\, check out YouTube! YouTube has a video for everything – search “Guided Outdoor Walking Workout” and select the video that speaks to you! \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n February 24th – Bodyweight Exercises \nYou can build strength while walking with more than just weights. Pause your walk and do some bodyweight exercises on the side of the trail! These strength training intervals could include: \n\nPush-ups\nPlanks\nLunges\nCalf-raises\nMountain Climbers\nSquats\n\nNone of these bodyweight exercises require equipment\, so you can do them anywhere! Try walking for five minutes and incorporating some bodyweight exercises for one minute – 20 seconds on\, 1o seconds off. Repeat this cycle for however long you want your walking workout to last!

SUMMARY:New Canaan Land Trust’s Annual Membership Meeting
DESCRIPTION:New Canaan Land Trust invites its members and the community to its annual membership meeting on Tuesday\, November 15th at 6:30 pm. The Land Trust’s annual meeting offers residents the opportunity to learn more about the 55-year organization and meet like-minded members of the community. Comprised of almost 400 acres\, the conservation organization plays an important role in New Canaan in fulfilling its three-part mission of protecting open space\, caring for and restoring habitat on its properties\, and engaging the community. \nThe meeting will feature guest-speaker Sarah Finnie Robinson\, a New Canaan resident and the founding director of The 51 Percent Project\, a climate communication initiative based at Boston University Institute for Global Sustainability. Robinson holds faculty appointments at Boston University’s College of Communication and at the Graduate Program in Urban Biogeoscience & Environmental Health. Following a career in mainstream media (The New Yorker\, The Atlantic\, iVillage)\, in 2010 Robinson co-founded WeSpire\, a WIRED and Fast Company award-winning company that provides a behavior-change platform for corporations to engage employees in sustainability goals and related programs. In 2018\, Sarah founded The 51 Percent Project to identify best practices and principles of climate change communication\, which is a burgeoning field of behavioral science. In her talk\, Robinson will focus on climate change communications principals relevant to New Canaan residents\, as well as how the community and the Land Trust can address climate change.  A Q & A session will follow the presentation. \nThe annual meeting will take place at the New Canaan Nature Center\, 144 Oenoke Ridge from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. Hors d’oeuvres and refreshments will be served.  For more information\, please contact the Land Trust at info@newcanaanlandtrust.org or 203-972-1270. \n \n Register Now

SUMMARY:Wellness Wednesdays: Connecting Through the Senses
DESCRIPTION:Click Here to Register\n \n \n \n \n \n Date: 10/12/22 Time: 10:00 AM Rain Date: 10/19/22 Topic: Connecting Through The Senses Location: Council Ring @ Still Pond  \nDescription:  We spend a lot of our time in “simulator mode”\, removed from the present moment as we envision future scenarios or past events. Not all of that time is helpful\, and often we may be missing out on the richness of life that is occurring in the present moment.  Luckily\, we can use our senses to connect us to the present moment so we don’t miss out on the the most important moment of our life – the one that is unfolding right now.  Join us as we engage our five senses to help us come home to the present moment.  Join us at Still Pond Preserve where we’ll make our way to the Council Ring\, a special place that evokes a deep sense of community and togetherness.   \nAbout the Instructor:  Erika Long \nErika began meditating while working in finance on Wall Street\, and found that it helped her see more clearly\, respond more wisely and relate more closely to the people and events in her life. \nFor the past twenty years\, she has followed the teachings of Jon Kabat-Zinn (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction)\, Joseph Goldstein\, Bob Thurman\, Sharon Salzberg\, Gil Fronsdal and many others; and traveled in India with Shantum Seth (a student of Thich Nhat Hanh).  She has also studied non-violent communication and believes in its power to create community. \nErika is a Certified Mindfulness Teacher under MMTCP (the Meditation and Mindfulness Teachers Certification Program led by Tara Brach and Jack Kornfield) in partnership with UC Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center\, and is a Certified Mindfulness Teacher – Professional Level\, International Mindfulness Teachers Association.    She is particularly fascinated by the neuroscientific research on meditation and mindfulness and feels passionately about expanding access to the benefits of meditation and mindfulness. \nAbout the Wellness Series: Residents from all walks of life have relied on the New Canaan Land Trust’s preserves to find peace and solace. The stone labyrinth designed by artist Christopher Kaczmarek (installed as part of the 2020 New Canaan Sculpture Trail) will be incorporated into our moving meditation. Discover inner stillness through outer movement in one of New Canaan’s most special natural spaces! \nAbout the Practice: Some of us access inner stillness by sitting still. Some of us access inner stillness through movement. Sometimes it depends on the day. Walking meditation can help us connect with our bodies in the present moment\, helping our nervous system breathe a big sigh of relief. By intentionally slowing down a habitual movement we can invoke Beginner’s Mind and a real sense of exploration and discovery. Bringing curiosity to this experience can cause a release of dopamine\, which will support our learning\, memory\, and motivation.  \nAll ages and abilities are welcome. Bring water and wear sunscreen and/or bug spray\, if desired. \nTo register\, please click the button\, below. Your $5 registration fee will help offset the cost of this event. \nThe main parking area and access point for the Watson-Symington Preserve is located along Wellesley Drive\, just north of Sherwood Lane. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nAbout the Instructor:  Lisa Sheehan  \nLisa Sheehan holds a master’s degree in counseling psychology and is a registered Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) instructor through UMASS Medical School Center for Mindfulness.  She is a Yoga Alliance certified instructor (E-RYT\, RCYT)\, passionate about sharing mindfulness with adults and students from preschool to high school in school settings.  Lisa has been a facilitator with New Canaan based Community Mindfulness Project (CMP)\, since 2016.   \nAbout the Wellness Series: Residents from all walks of life have relied on the New Canaan Land Trust’s preserves to find peace and solace. As we move into the autumn months and the leaves begin to change color and temperatures cool\, the New Canaan Land Trust\, Let’s Talk About It New Canaan\, and The Community Mindfulness Project are partnering to create a series of wellness events inspired by nature and the outdoors. Through walking meditation\, shinrin yoku/forest bathing\, and mindful eating and other practices\, program participants will learn about and have the opportunity to practice a number of different techniques to promote mental health and wellbeing. The goals of each program will be to teach participants a practice\, ensure that they have the resources and experience to continue that practice on their own\, and introduce them to the Land Trust’s network of open space. \nThe NC Community Wellness Series is made possible by a generous grant from the Rotary Club of New Canaan. \n\n\n \n Click Here to Register

He has contributed articles to scientific publications and his mark-recapture studies with Swallowtail butterflies was recently cited in the book Swallowtails of the Americas. During the pandemic he is doing a pollinator survey of two meadows in Redding\, CT. \nRecent butterfly study trips with his spouse Roanna\, a photographer\, include several visits to Amazon forest in Guyana\, Nicaragua\, and yearly studies in the Montane region of California assessing the impact of climate change on the fauna there. His work in South America was recently featured in The Yale Environmental News. \nFor the past 40 years Victor has been the owner of Monarch Painting\, a decorative painting firm in Redding\, Connecticut\, which specializes\, in faux finishes and tromple l’oeil.  His murals often feature natural history subjects such as native wild flowers and butterflies. Clients delight to a monarch butterfly painted sitting on top of a window frame in an unlikely corner of their house. Metamorphosis is the company’s slogan.

SUMMARY:Firefly Viewings - 2022
DESCRIPTION:Since opening in 2015\, the New Canaan Land Trust’s Firefly Sanctuary has grown in popularity. In an effort to protect the Sanctuary and the firefly population itself\, we require advanced registration for admittance into the sanctuary during the peak firefly viewing season of June 26 through July 9. Registration for each night will open one week prior to that date\, below. \nVisitors are welcome to visit the Firefly Sanctuary outside of these dates\, without registering. While not the “peak” of the firefly season\, the fireflies will still be active through mid/late July as the firefly mating season tapers off. \nRegistration links will display here \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Sunday\, June 26\n \n Monday\, June 27\n \n Tuesday\, June 28\n \n Wednesday\, June 29\n \n Thursday\, June 30\n \n Friday\, July 1\n \n Saturday\, July 2\n \n Sunday\, July 3\n \n Tuesday\, July 5\n \n Wednesday\, July 6\n \n Thursday\, July 7\n \n Friday\, July 8\n \n Saturday\, July 9\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Location: Parking for the Firefly Sanctuary is located across from 33 Sleepy Hollow Road. Please park on the grassy pull-off\, near the white welcome sign for the sanctuary. The fireflies live in a large meadow located approximately 0.25 miles up the trail. \nTiming: Please plan to arrive by 8:30pm. Visitors will not be admitted into the Firefly Sanctuary after 8:45\, in an effort to reduce light pollution from flashlights (more on that below). You are welcome to stay and enjoy the fireflies until 10:30. \nLimiting Light Pollution: Fireflies communicate using light\, so any artificial light can confuse and disorient the fireflies during this critical mating period. As such\, we ask that you minimize use of any lights during your time at the sanctuary. By arriving at 8:30\, you will be able to make it up to the viewing area without the need for a flashlight. While viewing fireflies\, please limit phone use and do not take flash photos. \nUsing Insect Repellent Responsibly: Fireflies are also affected by insect repellent\, so we ask that you apply bug spray while at the parking area. No insect repellents may be applied at the viewing area. We encourage the use of natural insect repellents. \nWhat Else to Wear/Bring: We strongly encourage visitors to wear a long sleeve shirt\, long pants\, and a hat\, as mosquitos can be abundant. Sturdy shoes are also encouraged\, as the woodland trail is rocky and uneven in places. We have a number of benches for our visitors\, but you are welcome to bring a lawn chair\, should you want to sit away from the main seating area. There are no facilities at the Firefly Sanctuary.

SUMMARY:Gardening with Nature: Lecture by Edwina von Gal
DESCRIPTION:Register HERE\n \n \n \n \n \n Co-presented by The Glass House the New Canaan Pollinator Pathway Partners \nOur obsession with tidy\, “clean” landscapes is proving to be harmful to the things and the ones we love. How can we step away from the need for “neat” and let nature play a role in how we perceive\, design\, and maintain our human-dominated landscapes? Join celebrated landscape designer Edwina von Gal for an online lecture that considers the rewards of gardening with nature\, not against it. She will also discuss her new initiative Two Thirds for the Birds\, a call to action to landscape and environmental professionals to make all their projects habitat friendly. \nPrincipal of her eponymous landscape design firm since 1984\, Edwina von Gal creates landscapes with a focus on simplicity and sustainability for private and public clients around the world. Her book Fresh Cuts won the Quill and Trowel award for garden writing. In 2008\, while designing the park for The Biomuseo Panama\, she founded the Azuero Earth Project\, promoting native species reforestation on Panama’s Azuero Peninsula\, perhaps the first of its kind to work without synthetic chemicals. In 2013\, she created the Perfect Earth Project\, a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising consciousness about the dangers of toxic lawn and garden chemicals\, and the importance of planting native species\, to protect the health of people\, their pets\, and the planet. In 2021\, she launched a new initiative\, Two Thirds for the Birds. She is currently converting her own property\, Marshouse\, into a laboratory and teaching center for Whole and Healthy landscape practices. \nEdwina received the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art’s Arthur Ross Award in 2012 and is the 2017 recipient of Guild Hall’s Academy of the Arts Lifetime Achievement Award for the Visual Arts. In 2018 she received the NY School of Interior Design’s Green Design Award and The Isamu Noguchi Award\, as well as the Conservator Award from Quogue Wildlife Refuge in 2020. She lectures regularly about nature-based landscape solutions. \n \n Register HERE

SUMMARY:Religion & Environment: An Interfaith Exploration of Conservation and Environmentalism
DESCRIPTION:Click HERE to register\n \n \n \n \n \n Join the New Canaan Land Trust and Interfaith Council of New Canaan in an interfaith exploration of conservation and environmentalism. Centered around the three Abrahamic faiths\, this program will explore the different ways that religion tasks us with protecting and stewarding the earth. We welcome community members of all faiths to join us. \nThe program will begin with a lecture from Drs. Mary Evelyn Tucker and John Grim\, professors at Yale University\, and Co-Directors of the Yale Forum on Religion and Ecology. Their presentation will link conservation and environmentalism to the teachings of many of the world’s religions. Drs. Tucker and Grim will also help us to understand how different faiths interpret and and ask us to respond to the environmental issues that we face today. \nFollowing the lecture\, we will host a panel discussion with faith leaders from in and around New Canaan. The panel will be moderated by Reverend Stephanie Johnson\, a former student of Drs. Tucker and Grim\, who has spent many years working at the intersection of theology and environmentalism and facilitates faith-based environmental programs. Additional information about the panel is below. \nThis program will be hosted via Zoom Webinar. Due to the Omicron surge\, we are no longer offering in-person attendance. \n \n Click HERE to Register\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Featured Lecturers \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Mary Evelyn Tucker and John Grim teach at Yale School of the Environment and Yale Divinity School.
