DESCRIPTION:Click Here to Register\n \n \n \n \n \n Date: 11/9/22 Time: 10:00 AM Rain Date: 11/16/22 Topic: Forest Bathing Location: Browne Preserve  \nDescription:  The Japanese practice of shinrin-yoku\, which translates to ‘forest bathing’\, is the medicine of simply being in the forest.  It is a research-based framework for supporting healing and wellness.  The purpose is to slow down and become immersed in the natural environment.  The  mental and physical health benefits include reducing stress and fostering relaxation\, boosting the immune system\, increasing energy\, and decreasing anxiety\, depression and anger.   \nAbout the Instructor:  Carol Shear \nCarol Shear\, BNRN is a facilitator and grant writer/development strategist for Community Mindfulness Project\, Inc non-profit\, whose mission is to empower people to lead healthy lives by expanding access to mindful meditation: science has shown that evidence-based mindfulness practices offset the effects of stress\, improve emotional regulation and foster a sense of connection. Carol is a Baccalaureate Registered Nurse\, Duke University Integrative Medicine Health Coach and trained (Practicum\, Mind-Body Medicine) in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) through the Center For Mindfulness at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.  She is also a UConn certified Master Gardener.  \nAbout the Wellness Series: Residents from all walks of life have relied on the New Canaan Land Trust’s preserves to find peace and solace. As we move into the autumn months and the leaves begin to change color and temperatures cool\, the New Canaan Land Trust\, Let’s Talk About It New Canaan\, and The Community Mindfulness Project are partnering to create a series of wellness events inspired by nature and the outdoors. Through walking meditation\, shinrin yoku/forest bathing\, and mindful eating and other practices\, program participants will learn about and have the opportunity to practice a number of different techniques to promote mental health and wellbeing. The goals of each program will be to teach participants a practice\, ensure that they have the resources and experience to continue that practice on their own\, and introduce them to the Land Trust’s network of open space. \n \n Click Here to Register

SUMMARY:Wellness Wednesdays: Connecting Through the Senses
DESCRIPTION:Click Here to Register\n \n \n \n \n \n Date: 10/12/22 Time: 10:00 AM Rain Date: 10/19/22 Topic: Connecting Through The Senses Location: Council Ring @ Still Pond  \nDescription:  We spend a lot of our time in “simulator mode”\, removed from the present moment as we envision future scenarios or past events. Not all of that time is helpful\, and often we may be missing out on the richness of life that is occurring in the present moment.  Luckily\, we can use our senses to connect us to the present moment so we don’t miss out on the the most important moment of our life – the one that is unfolding right now.  Join us as we engage our five senses to help us come home to the present moment.  Join us at Still Pond Preserve where we’ll make our way to the Council Ring\, a special place that evokes a deep sense of community and togetherness.   \nAbout the Instructor:  Erika Long \nErika began meditating while working in finance on Wall Street\, and found that it helped her see more clearly\, respond more wisely and relate more closely to the people and events in her life. \nFor the past twenty years\, she has followed the teachings of Jon Kabat-Zinn (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction)\, Joseph Goldstein\, Bob Thurman\, Sharon Salzberg\, Gil Fronsdal and many others; and traveled in India with Shantum Seth (a student of Thich Nhat Hanh).  She has also studied non-violent communication and believes in its power to create community. \nErika is a Certified Mindfulness Teacher under MMTCP (the Meditation and Mindfulness Teachers Certification Program led by Tara Brach and Jack Kornfield) in partnership with UC Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center\, and is a Certified Mindfulness Teacher – Professional Level\, International Mindfulness Teachers Association.    She is particularly fascinated by the neuroscientific research on meditation and mindfulness and feels passionately about expanding access to the benefits of meditation and mindfulness. \nAbout the Wellness Series: Residents from all walks of life have relied on the New Canaan Land Trust’s preserves to find peace and solace. SUMMARY:Wellness Wednesdays: Walking Meditation
DESCRIPTION:Click Here to Register\n \n \n \n \n \n Date: 9/14/22Time: 10:00 AMTopic: Walking MeditationLocation: Watson-Symington Preserve \nDescription: Join us in walking meditation at Watson-Symington Preserve led by the Community Mindfulness Project. The stone labyrinth designed by artist Christopher Kaczmarek (installed as part of the 2020 New Canaan Sculpture Trail) will be incorporated into our moving meditation. Discover inner stillness through outer movement in one of New Canaan’s most special natural spaces! \nAbout the Practice: Some of us access inner stillness by sitting still. Some of us access inner stillness through movement. Sometimes it depends on the day. Walking meditation can help us connect with our bodies in the present moment\, helping our nervous system breathe a big sigh of relief. By intentionally slowing down a habitual movement we can invoke Beginner’s Mind and a real sense of exploration and discovery. Bringing curiosity to this experience can cause a release of dopamine\, which will support our learning\, memory\, and motivation.  \nAll ages and abilities are welcome. Bring water and wear sunscreen and/or bug spray\, if desired. \nTo register\, please click the button\, below. Your $5 registration fee will help offset the cost of this event. \nThe main parking area and access point for the Watson-Symington Preserve is located along Wellesley Drive\, just north of Sherwood Lane. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nAbout the Instructor:  Lisa Sheehan  \nLisa Sheehan holds a master’s degree in counseling psychology and is a registered Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) instructor through UMASS Medical School Center for Mindfulness.  She is a Yoga Alliance certified instructor (E-RYT\, RCYT)\, passionate about sharing mindfulness with adults and students from preschool to high school in school settings.  Lisa has been a facilitator with New Canaan based Community Mindfulness Project (CMP)\, since 2016. \nThe NC Community Wellness Series is made possible by a generous grant from the Rotary Club of New Canaan. \n\n\n \n Click Here to Register

SUMMARY:Firefly Viewings: Three Nights!!!
DESCRIPTION:This program is co-sponsored by the New Canaan Land Trust and New Canaan Library. Please register on the Library’s event page (link coming soon). \nLocal entomologists believe that the New Canaan Land Trust’s Firefly Sanctuary is home to one of the largest populations of fireflies in our region. During a few weeks each summer\, the fireflies light up the night sky as they try to find and attract a mate. Join guides from the New Canaan Land Trust on a short walk through the property\, which will culminate with a viewing of the firefly show. The walk will last approximately 25 minutes\, and participants are welcome to stay and enjoy the firefly display for as long as they wish. \nWe will be offering guided walks and viewings on three evenings: June 30\, July 1\, and July 2. \nParticipants should bring a flashlight and wear sturdy shoes\, long pants\, and a long sleeve shirt (it gets buggy). Our walk will traverse wooded trails with sometimes uneven terrain.
